According to some estimates, roughly 33% of the entire population has worn braces at some point. So, it’s not surprising that so much is known about this orthodontic treatment, from what they look like to what the teeth-straightening process entails. However, there are still several fun facts about braces that many patients are surprised to learn. Here are five!

1. Braces Are Almost 300 Years Old

The creation of braces is credited to Pierre Fauchard, a French physician. In 1728, he created a device to expand the palate, which was called a “Bandeau.” He also published a book called “The Surgeon Dentist” that detailed his methods for straightening teeth.

2. Braces Do More Than Straighten Teeth

Over the years, braces have remained one of the most popular teeth-straightening treatments. However, many patients are unaware that they also can correct common bite issues, like overbites and underbites. As a result, braces can improve the look of your smile as well as your bite patterns, speech, and breathing.

3. Braces Aren’t Just for Kids and Teens

Since many patients with braces are kids and teens, adults often think that they are “too old” to pursue orthodontic treatment. However, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) reported that of the four million patients who have braces, roughly one million are over the age of 18. Simply put, it’s never too late to invest in the look, health, and function of your smile!

4. Braces Don’t Set Off Metal Detectors

Over the years, several rumors have surfaced about braces, including that they will set off metal detectors. That’s not the case. Your brackets and wires also won’t increase your risk of being hit by lightning or pick up radio transmissions either!

5. We Have NASA to Thank for Modern Braces

NASA created a nickel titanium that was able to keep its shape even when exposed to body heat and/or pressure. Now, that same material is in most orthodontic wires! So, we have this space program to thank for modern braces.

Now you know a few fun facts about braces! If you’d like to learn more about this modern orthodontic solution or you have a question for our team, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
