Balancing Your Bite: Why Top and Bottom Braces Are Important

Braces are a tried-and-true form of orthodontic treatment, having assisted countless generations of patients with straightening their smiles. You might be curious about getting braces yourself, but you may also be wondering if you’re able to get braces on just your top or bottom teeth. While this might seem fine at first glance, the truth is, dentists and orthodontists recommend getting braces on both arches for very important reasons. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Most Patients Benefit from Braces on Both Arches

Your teeth don’t work alone; they function as part of a system. Your top and bottom teeth need to fit together properly for you to bite, chew, laugh, speak, and smile comfortably. Placing braces on only one arch can actually end up throwing off the entire balance of your smile, leading to more issues than what you started with.

For example, if only the top or bottom teeth are moved, your bite might become misaligned. This can also lead to jaw discomfort or issues with the temporomandibular joints, the hinge-like joints that attach your jawbones to your skull. Of course, an uneven bite can also lead to premature wear on certain teeth.

Are There Any Exceptions?

In very specific situations, such as when only a few teeth are mildly misaligned on the top or bottom arch, an orthodontist might suggest limited braces treatment. Just keep in mind that this is rare, and careful evaluation is needed first to ensure it won’t lead to any bite issues or other inconsistencies.

Tips for Ensuring Successful Orthodontic Treatment

Whether you have a full set of braces or end up lucky enough to only need them on your top or bottom teeth, here are some simple tips to ensure that your treatment stays on track:

  • Watch what you eat and try to avoid particularly sticky or chewy foods, as well as hard and crunchy items that may damage a bracket or wire.
  • Maintain great oral hygiene by brushing and flossing every day—dental issues can and will cause setbacks!
  • Follow your orthodontist’s advice at every stage—keep up with your check-ins, listen to their advice, ask questions as needed, and allow them to make adjustments to ensure that your treatment continues smoothly.
  • Wear your retainer after treatment; otherwise, your teeth might begin shifting back to their incorrect positions.

Every smile is unique, and your orthodontist’s goal is to create results that are both beautiful and functional. This is why braces are usually placed on both the top and bottom arches; it’s all about a consistent and comprehensive approach!
