Now that your child has braces, you may be wondering how it will change their daily life, including what they should eat while at school. Packing their lunchbox may cause confusion and uncertainty, but it doesn’t have to. There are plenty of delicious foods that are healthy and safe for their teeth and braces, but what are they? Here are some options to consider when making their lunch and including different snacks they can enjoy while they’re away from home.

Which Foods Are Braces-Friendly?

Wearing braces doesn’t mean your child has to give up all their favorite foods. Yes, adjustments are required to avoid an orthodontic emergency, but with your help, they can keep eating foods they enjoy. Some of the best ones to include in their lunchbox are:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Pudding or Jell-O
  • Soft cheese
  • Eggs
  • Casseroles
  • Rice
  • Chili
  • Soups
  • Soft fruits or hard ones cut into small, fine pieces
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Beans
  • Pancakes
  • Soft bread
  • Muffins
  • Popcorn without the kernels
  • Smoothies

In addition to considering which foods your child can eat safely, keep in mind which ones are healthiest. Too much sugar and starch can increase their risk of cavities, which can prove problematic while wearing braces. Pack a good mix of nutrient-rich foods that are full of calcium, protein, vitamin C, and more.

Which Foods Should You Not Pack in Your Child’s Lunch?

Your child might think there’s nothing wrong with eating some of the foods below, but one wrong bite and they could end up with a broken bracket or wire. When packing their lunch, keep these hard, sticky and chewy items out of their lunchbox:

  • Raw vegetables
  • Hard rolls
  • Croutons
  • Apples (whole)
  • Hard candy
  • Pretzels
  • Ice
  • Corn on the cob
  • Popcorn
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Broccoli florets
  • Granola bars
  • Fruit chews, taffy, and other sticky candies
  • Tough meat
  • Chewing gum

How Can They Care For Their Braces at School?

If you’re already packing their lunch for school, include a separate container or pouch with helpful oral hygiene products they can use to protect their braces. A travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash, dental wax, and extra elastic are all they need to keep their teeth, gums and appliances in good shape throughout the day.

Braces will likely require you and your child to make certain adjustments, but packing their lunch doesn’t have to be difficult. With a little planning, choosing the right foods can be simple and stress-free, helping your child or teenager stay on track and avoid potential damage during treatment.
