MassHealth (Medicaid and CHIP) is a wonderful provision for many families in our area. Understandably, though, it can be challenging to navigate; the benefits often come with a lot of stipulations that are different from traditional dental insurance! Do not worry. As a MassHealth orthodontist in Lawrence, our team is eager to help your family maximize the value of your plan. Continue reading below to learn more about how we can assist you, or contact us directly to set up an appointment.

MassHealth: How Does It Work?

MassHealth is the state’s name for Medicaid and CHIP benefits, which have been combined into a single program. The goal of MassHealth is to help families below certain income levels to enjoy essential services for free or for reduced prices. Eligible families need to fill out an application in order to start using MassHealth benefits.

While MassHealth dental benefits do not have an annual limit for children (patients under 19), there are stricter limits for adults.

Children’s Dental Services Covered Under MassHealth

The dental benefits provided under MassHealth generally cover things like exams, fillings, X-rays, crowns and even some types of oral surgery.

Keep in mind that MassHealth does not cover orthodontia for adults. However, medically necessary orthodontia for minors is typically covered. If your family’s plan is from MA Health Connector instead of directly through MassHealth, you may have an out-of-pocket maximum of $350 per child.

Our team can help you figure out how your benefits apply and how they may be able to help your child enjoy straighter, healthier teeth.

MassHealth Coverage for Adults

While MassHealth does not cover orthodontia for adults, there are other provisions that may make it easier for patients 19 and older to get the care they need. Ask us about payment options, including convenient low-interest installment plans. We hope to make high-quality care accessible for as many people as possible in our community!

Early Care Is the Key to a Healthy Smile

Orthodontic care can start when a child is as young as 7 years old, so do not hesitate to bring your child in for an evaluation. The earlier they get started with treatment, the less likely it is that they will suffer long-term ill effects of misaligned teeth, such as an increased risk of cavities or speech difficulties. After we examine their smile, we can discuss treatment options and start the process of using your family’s MassHealth benefits.
