Invisalign clear aligners are a fantastic way to straighten your smile discreetly and comfortably, but if you’re brand new to wearing them, you might be surprised by how snug those trays can feel when it’s time to take them out, when you put them in, or when it’s time to swap to a new set of trays. The good news is that in all these situations, it gets easier with practice! In the meantime, here are a few helpful tips to make wearing your Invisalign trays a smoother experience from day one of your treatment journey.
Give Yourself Time to Adjust
The first few days of wearing a new set of Invisalign trays are almost always the most uncomfortable, but believe it or not, that’s actually a good sign. That achy feeling means your aligners are doing exactly what they’re supposed to do, which is gently shifting your teeth toward their new positions.
Most patients find that their initial soreness fades a lot after the first 48 to 72 hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help if needed, and switching to your new sets of trays at night before bed is also wise since you’ll sleep through the tightest part of the adjustment period.
Keep Your Aligners Clean to Avoid Irritation
Believe it or not, dirty aligners can actually contribute to discomfort and irritation inside your mouth. Food particles and bacteria that become trapped between your tray and your teeth can cause soreness and even bad breath. It can also sometimes prevent the aligners from sitting properly.
To keep things fresh and comfortable, rinse your aligners with room-temperature water every time you take them out, and gently brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush daily. Also, always brush and floss before putting them back in after meals. Avoiding hot water is important, too, since it can warp their plastic and affect their fit.
Remove Your Trays the Right Way
Removing your aligners the correct way makes a big difference in how comfortable the process feels. Avoid trying to pull from the front of the tray, since this can make removal harder and may warp or break the aligner over time. You also don’t want to risk harming your teeth or gums.
Instead, start at the back of your mouth and use your fingertip or thumbnail to gently hook underneath the edge of the tray at one of your back molars. Slowly alternate sides, working from back to front, until the aligner lifts away easily.
Wearing Invisalign comfortably is simply a matter of practicing good habits, keeping your teeth and aligners clean, and being patient. If you stay the course, it won’t be long before your smile is beautifully straightened!
